FORNEY, Texas — Goodyear Tire Company broke ground in Forney on Friday morning — paving the way for a new 1.2-million square foot distribution facility in the Gateway area.
In October, the Forney City Council voted 6-1 to rezone 102 acres of agricultural land at the southwest corner of South Gateway Boulevard and U.S. Highway 80 to light industrial.
The distribution facility is anticipated to employ 160 full-time positions.
"The effort to bring this employer to Forney has been a joint partnership with the Forney Economic Development Corporation (FEDC), Hillwood Properties, Petro-Hunt, the City Council and many departments within the City," stated the city's release.
“We’re thrilled about the opportunity to bring such an iconic company to Forney," Forney EDC Executive Director Warren Ketteman stated in October when the project was unveiled. "Goodyear is the most innovative tire manufacturer and distributor; this mirrors the efforts of the City and FEDC to continue to innovate for the benefit of our residents.”
Goodyear's current 764,000-square-foot Southwest Logistics Center opened in Terrell, Texas, in 1999 after establishing a triple freeport exemption. The facility, at the time, consolidated four other Goodyear hubs in Texas.
