FORNEY, Texas — The Forney City Council has approved an ordinance allowing for the sale and consumption of alcohol during approved special events at the Spellman Amphitheater, certain defined park facilities, and in downtown Forney.

The council held a brief discussion about the ordinance during their regularly scheduled meeting on June 4, 2019.

Alcohol sales at the Spellman Amphitheater has been a discussion since the amphitheater opened in 2012 as a means of driving additional traffic and larger, more popular artists and performers.

The council unanimously voted in favor or the ordinance.

The ordinance adds an exception to the general prohibition of alcoholic beverages at park facilities to allow for it when it is in conjunction with an approved special event, according to the agenda item. Additionally, the ordinance grants authority to the City Manager’s Office to grant variances without the need of public notice or a public hearing to the location restrictions within the City’s Code of Ordinances for the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages for special events within 300 feet of a church, school or hospital, daycare facility of child care facility, for the downtown area of the City.
