KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — There is something about cooler temperatures that annually reminds me of my love for the most important meal of the day - Breakfast.
Lately, we have found ourselves busier than usual in all corners of Kaufman County and we have noticed that these five places know how to attract a crowd when it comes to serving up a tasty start to your day. Again, we are not fancy food critics here, but it turns out our friends and neighbors in each of these communities are on to something delicious.
In Forney, the community is fiercely divided over their favorite breakfast spot; maybe more so than the high school team they cheer for on Friday night. The best spot is relative to who you ask; but no one is wrong. Mama’s Daughters’ Diner has a loyal fan base that flock to their downtown location for a variety of the morning classics made to order. The endless refills of hot coffee, free Wi-Fi and the most amazing biscuits and gravy keep us coming back time and time again. The service is fast and friendly, and no one will judge you if you order dessert with breakfast – according to sources.
Alfredo’s is also hugely popular in Forney. Located off Hwy 80, their fans swear by their pancakes and waffles and we can’t disagree. A fresh made waffle loaded with your choice of goodness on top makes it a favorite for kids of all ages. And while I can’t remember ever being served “bad” bacon; we found Alfredo’s bacon to be especially good and crispy. Alfredo’s and Mama’s will both serve breakfast anytime; because they’re awesome like that.
Driving through Kaufman during morning hours, it is not uncommon to see a back up of traffic on Washington St. as carloads anxiously await their turn at the original Little Mexico. This drive thru taco stand is worth the drive and the wait. Their breakfast burritos are made to order on freshly made flour tortillas and stuffed with your choice of meat, potatoes, real eggs and cheese. They give you an option of homemade red or green salsa; we advocate you try both. They are also willing to substitute your tortilla for a biscuit or in a bowl (no bread) – but that’s just crazy talk. With locations in Kemp, Gun Barrel City and Athens, you’re never too far from their monster burritos. Keep in mind their Kaufman and Kemp locations are cash only, so you will want to be prepared.
Happy Days Diner in Crandall is always a stop we look forward to. Located downtown, this place is known for their great coffee and huge portions. From eggs your way to French toast or huevos ranchero and everything in between, Happy Days provides good and consistent diner breakfast fare. No matter what we have ordered here, we always leave stuffed and satisfied. Their Sunday morning breakfast buffet is sure to satisfy any breakfast lover’s cravings. Pace yourself.
And last, but certainly not least is Kountry Kitchen in downtown Terrell. This local favorite makes me think of a home cooked breakfast my grandmother would make. No frills, nothing fancy, just good simple food cooked with a lot of love. Everything is made fresh to order and perfectly seasoned. They make a mean breakfast sandwich too and we love how quick and inexpensive they are. Worth a visit, but the only place on our list that is closed on Sundays.
No matter where you are in Kaufman County on any day, you are never far from a great breakfast. Enjoy!
