MABANK, Texas — Mabank Fire Department firefighter Mathew "Mat" Charles Ewaskiw is being remembered by family, friends, and community members for his servant's heart — having proudly served a number of roles as a public servant in his community.
"Mat was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend," reads, in part, his obituary. "Everyone knew they could count on him anytime. He was very loved and appreciated."
He tragically passed peacefully at his home on September 19, 2020, at the age of 43.
As an adult in the Mabank community, you may have seen Ewaskiw in action over the years serving with the police department, the fire marshal's office, or the fire department. As a child, you may have witnessed his exuberant personality through "Higbee" the clown as he taught life and fire safety at area schools as a member of the Life and Safety Clown Association, or LAFS.
A Higbee notch, according to Mabank Assistant Chief Kyle McAfee, is a mark or cut in the couplings of a fire hose that helps firefighters rapidly connect two hoses together — an essential guide in fire operations — making Higbee the perfect clown name for Ewaskiw.
"Mat was a perfect guide in making things connect and making it work," McAfee stated on Facebook. "Mat and I started the clown program back in 2005, and if it weren't for his bright ideas, fun, crazy sense of humor, and just going along with whatever was thrown towards us, it wouldn't have been so successful."
"Mat was a special part of this community and will be missed tremendously," continues his obituary. "He was always ready with a joke and a smile and enjoyed making others days brighter."
A memorial service for Ewaskiw is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2020, at 3 p.m. at the Mabank Pavilion.
