MESQUITE, Texas (Mesquite Police Department) — As the frequency of individual online sales through websites such as Craigslist has increased over the past few years, we have noticed an increase in the number of cases where the seller or buyer later reported being the victim of a fraudulent transaction or theft.
In these cases, the buyers and sellers met in-person to complete the sales transactions. In some cases, the buyers purchased the items using money that was later determined to be counterfeit. In other cases, the buyers simply took the items from the sellers without paying for the merchandise.
With this in mind, we at the Mesquite Police Department have created a Safe Exchange Zone in front of the police building. A parking space has been reserved for residents to complete face-to-face sales transactions. This spot is clearly marked with signs and the curb labeled Exchange Zone. This area is under video surveillance 24 hours a day.
We encourage residents to include the use of the Exchange Zone when completing any transactions. This should minimize your risk of being victimized, and in the unfortunate event that you fall prey to an unscrupulous person, we will have video footage that may assist investigating officers with identifying the suspects and later charging them with a criminal offense.
