KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The driver of an 18-wheeler was airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital after crashing over a westbound U.S. Highway 80 bridge which resulted in the overnight closure of the westbound lanes due to a large fuel spill into the creek below, according to county officials.
The crash occurred around 2:20 a.m. on westbound U.S. Highway 80 just west of Spur 557. Police reported the 18-wheeler struck a utility pole and crashed over the bridge railing at Big Brushy Creek.
Westbound U.S. Highway 80 was closed as a result of the crash and crews were working to clean up the fuel spill and crash into the late morning hours.
According to Kaufman County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie, the crash resulted in a spill of over 100 gallons of fuel.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas with unknown injuries.
As of 10 a.m., Howie says crews were wrapping up the cleanup efforts.
