KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas β Dallas Police Department officer Amber Guyger has turned herself into the Kaufman County Jail on a manslaughter warrant which was issued after a fatal shooting last week.
Guyger, according to Dallas Police Department Chief Renee Hall in a press release and statements late last week, was returning home on Thursday night after her shift ended but, instead of entering her own apartment, she entered the apartment of 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean. Guyger, thinking Jean was an intruder in what she believed was her apartment, shot Jean.
Jean was transported to an area hospital where he later died.
Guyger had been with the Dallas Police Department for four years and was assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division, according to the Dallas Police Department.
The shooting occurred at the South Side Flats, located at 1210 South Lamar Street, not far from the Southeast Patrol Division headquarters on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at approximately 9:59 p.m.
Hall says, based on gathered evidence, the department sought a manslaughter warrant and turned the investigation over to the Texas Rangers. Hall also says a blood sample was drawn to test for drugs and alcohol.
βOn behalf of the Dallas Police Department, we are continuing to pray for Mr. Jeanβs family and ask that the community remain patient as this investigation is conducted,β stated Chief Hall.
Guyger turned herself in to the Kaufman County Jail alongside her attorney's and a representative from the Dallas Police Officers Association. Her bond was set at $300,000 by Justice of the Peace Mike Smith. She posted bond and was released shortly after press time.
This is a developing story.
