PAYNE SPRINGS, Texas — Police say a man sought out and stabbed a man he thought stole from him early Sunday morning in the Payne Springs area.
The stabbing victim, who later died, was later determined to not be the person the suspect had originally sought, according to police.
Around 5 a.m., the Henderson County Sheriff's Office received a report of a suspicious person on Double Bridge Road in the Cherokee Shores Subdivision.
The suspicious person was reportedly carrying a butcher knife and searching for someone who stole from him, Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse stated in a press release. A short time later, a stabbing victim was reported nearby.
Hillhouse says 65-year-old Doyle Wayne Deason confessed to stabbing 43-year-old Bryan Rodgers. Rodgers was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Gun Barrel City for a single stab wound where he was pronounced deceased at 6:44 a.m.
Deason was searching for someone who he says stole from him and, through interviews with Deason, was later determined to not have been Rodgers, according to Hillhouse.
During the altercation, Hillhouse says Deason suffered a minor gunshot wound and sought aid from a neighbor on Double Bridge Road. The gun believed to be involved in the incident was discovered at the scene on Huntoon Trail.
After a joint investigation by the Henderson County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers, and the Henderson County District Attorney's Office, Deason was located and arrested on Timber Road, which is located in the Timber Bay subdivision, a short distance from the stabbing location.
Deason remains in the Henderson County Jail where he awaits arraignment on the murder charge.
