KAUFMAN, Texas — In the midst of NCAA Final Four history, where Texas is represented in both the men’s and women’s bracket; the love for the court has never been higher. This summer a new basketball academy premieres that will give local enthusiasts the opportunity to train with a local pro who is internationally known and NBA trained.
Bryan Lucas was a standout player at the University of North Texas when he graduated in 2001 and was drafted to the NBA’s G league. After 2 years there setting a record in double doubles, Lucas was recruited to play in Europe where he spent six seasons. Playing internationally Lucas gained attention as a Top 10 scorer and rebounder for multiple seasons.
After six years playing across Europe, Lucas and his wife and newborn son returned to the state’s to be closer to family and Lucas took up coaching. Since then Lucas has coached at both Forney ISD and Kaufman ISD, aside from being a graduate of the NBA assistant coaching program.
This summer he is offering his experience and expertise for a one of a kind basketball academy for any students in 5th-12th grade to learn how to train like the pros.
“The academy will provide in depth drills and techniques used at the highest level to develop players for real competition,” Lucas tells inForney.com. “The academy will not only sharpen your skills it will give you the strategies and knowledge on how to love and play the game.”
Lucas says he is excited about the opportunity to host the academy in Kaufman county.
“There is so much young talent here,” Lucas said. “It won’t be long till we see players from our community participating in the NCAA tournament or the NBA. I can’t wait.”
Lucas’ announcement has already gained the endorsement of NBA coaches, scouts and former players.
"Bryan spent time in the NBA's Assistant Coaches Program and showed his commitment to developing and improving as a coach. He is organized and thoughtful in his approach with players and understands how to help players be successful at the high school level and can assist players in their transition to college basketball as well as professionally," says Butch Carter, former Toronto Raptors head coach.
“I highly recommend Bryan and his new academy for parents and young players that want a structured and professional environment.”
Acie Law, an Atlanta Hawks first round draft pick and two-time Euroleague champion, says Coach Lucas is one of the most highly qualified coaches for skill and strategy.
“His attention to detail and knowledge of the game will prepare all levels for success. I would highly recommend him for any level of basketball,” Law says. Law is currently a scout for the Sacramento Kings.
The academy will be held at Kaufman High School and is available for individuals or whole teams in 5th-12th grade. There is no obligation, players can attend one practice or all. Each session costs $10 per participant.

“I am excited about sharing my personal and professional experience and my passion for the game with these kids,” Lucas said. “This game has been a vehicle for me to see the world, and I don’t want anyone not to have that opportunity - if they have the heart and work ethic - to play out their wildest dreams too. This summer we will begin to prepare them for that journey. We’re going to have a lot of fun along the way.”
