A CH-47 Chinook helicopter landed at Forney High School on Friday morning, November 16, 2012, at approximately 8:20 a.m. with clear blue skies. The helicopter was flown in to help educate Forney High School students about the mission the United States National Guard serves, at home and abroad.
The Chinook left Grand Prairie around 8:00 a.m. and arrived shortly after 8:20 a.m. at the east side of the Forney High School campus. National Guard Sergeant First Class Robert Caves taught the students the role that the Chinook plays during rescue missions and other such events.
SFC Caves said, “The national Guard is a community service based organization that is not only designed to fight overseas, but to help people here at home when they need it most. We need a lot more people to enlist into our organization to ensure that Texas is well protected.”
SFC Caves and Forney High School Law, Public Safety, and Corrections and Security teacher Randall Cobbs worked together to make this event possible and coordinating with local officials. Cobbs’ students prepared and marked the landing zone (LZ) before the helicopter arrived, the landing zone was designated LZ Jackrabbit. Cobbs said that he currently has more than 30 of his previous students serving in uniform as members of the armed forces, police officers, and firefighters.
