Forney submits notice of establishment for railroad crossing quiet zone

FORNEY, Texas (City of Forney) – City residents will be able to sleep more soundly, as the City of Forney submitted a notice of establishment of a Quiet Zone to the Federal Railroad Administration, the final step of the Quiet Zone process. As of August 8, the Union Pacific Railroad will no longer be able to sound their horns through the designated Quiet Zone, which includes the Bois d’ Arc, Elm, Center and Chestnut Street crossings, along with the FM 548 crossing.

“The City was approved to construct a Quiet Zone by the Federal Railroad Administration in June 2015.” said Chris Metz, the Public Works Director. “The downtown motorists, residents and businesses can coexist with the trains, and a Quiet Zone allows us to strike that balance."

In order to silence the train horn, the City had to upgrade four railroad crossings through Downtown Forney. The upgrades included street medians, pedestrian sidewalks and signage in order to meet the Quiet Zone requirements established by the Federal Railroad Administration. While the new signs that have been installed display the wording “No Horn”, they too will not be in effect until August 8. The upgrades will also provide an additional safeguard to pedestrians and motorists to alert them of any on-coming trains as they approach the crossings.
