TERRELL, Texas β The Terrell Police Department is continuing their investigation of a fatal accident on State Highway (SH) 34 early Saturday morning, June 21, 2014, which resulted in the death of 57-year-old Darrell Ray Mellody of Royse City, Texas.
TERRELL, Texas β The Terrell Police Department is continuing their investigation of a fatal accident on State Highway (SH) 34 early Saturday morning, June 21, 2014, which resulted in the death of 57-year-old Darrell Ray Mellody of Royse City, Texas.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:39 a.m. in the 1700 block of SH 34 near the Super 8 Motel south of I-20. The vehicle was heading southbound on SH 34 when it crossed into the opposite lanes of traffic, hit a culvert to the entrance of Super 8 Motel, and then struck a utility pole.
After striking the utility pole, the vehicle continued another 1,900 feet through a field before stopping near a tree line by Kings Creek β approximately 500 feet from SH 34. A witness at a nearby Valero gas station told inForney.com it appeared as if the vehicle never attempted to brake or slowdown.
The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, βwas unconscious, unresponsive, and showing no outward signs of life upon officer arrival,β according to Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom. βHe was transported by ETMC and still had no signs of life.β
The investigation into the cause of the accident continues, according to Sansom, who also said they don't believe alcohol, speed, or drugs played a role in the accident.
The top half of the utility pole struck by the driver remained intact and hung from the utility lines above while the bottom half was on the ground.
