The Texas Department of State Health Services Vital Statistics Unit has named the Kaufman County Clerk's office as a recipient of the 2012 Five Star Award for Local Registrars. The Kaufman County Clerk's office is among 49 local registrars in the entire State of Texas to receive this award.

The Texas Department of State Health Services Vital Statistics Unit has named the Kaufman County Clerk's office as a recipient of the 2012 Five Star Award for Local Registrars. The Kaufman County Clerk's office is among 49 local registrars in the entire State of Texas to receive this award.

The Kaufman County Clerk's office is responsible for receiving, certifying and issuing certified birth and death records, issuing funeral related permits, filing amendments to birth and death records, and assisting families with affidavits of paternity.

In order to receive this award, the Kaufman County Clerk's office must have met or exceeded a criteria set forth by the State of Texas. The criteria includes recording 85% or more birth certificates within one business day, special training courses, timelines for filing vital county records, collaborating with other vital registration partners, management of the county registration process, and passing an on-site assessment from an individual from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

During Laura Hughes' 12 year tenure as the Kaufman County Clerk, the office has been recognized with the Five Star Award eight times. “We have one of the best County Clerks’ offices in Texas and I am so proud of my staff for their hard work and dedication in achieving this goal,” stated Ms. Hughes.

Geraldine Harris, the State Registrar presented the award to Laura Hughes, Bonita Garvin and Karen Jones during the 58th Annual Texas Vital Statistics Conference, which was held in Austin.
