Texas Rangers draft Forney High School's Mason Englert in fourth round

FORNEY, Texas — Forney High School senior Mason Englert was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft earlier today.

FORNEY, Texas — Forney High School senior Mason Englert was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft earlier today.

But, the excitement isn't over for Englert as the Forney High School Jackrabbits head to the state tournament later this week in Austin — vying to make history to be one of only a handful of schools to win same-year softball and baseball state championships.

Englert, the No. 114 prospect, was selected by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the draft at Pick 119.

Earlier this season, Englert broke the state record for consecutive scoreless innings with 55 1/3 — besting former record holder David Clyde.

Englert, who committed to Texas A&M, joins Zack Segovia as the only other player to be drafted from Forney High School. Graduates Josh Geer and Curtis Thigpen went on to play in the big leagues.

"Englert's fastball increased from the upper 80s last summer to the low 90s this spring, featuring good sink and downhill plane," according to his draft report. "With his projectable 6-foot-4 frame and athleticism, he should continue to add velocity and develop a consistent plus heater."

"His low-80s slider with late bite is his best secondary offering, and he also throws a curveball more notable for its shape than its power as well as a work-in-progress changeup," stated the report. "Englert has a sound arm action and delivery that he repeats well, giving him the possibility for future above-average control and command."

Englert's slot value for the 119th pick is approximately $464,700, according to the MLB.com.

Tomorrow, at 10 a.m., the community will send-off the Forney High School baseball team as they leave the baseball field to travel to Austin for their Thursday matchup against Corpus Christi Veterens Memorial in the semifinals of the Class 5A state tournament. That matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
