TERRELL, Texas — Driving while intoxicated (DWI) charges are pending for a Wills Point, Texas, who disregarded railroad crossing arms and was struck by a train Sunday night in Terrell.

At approximately 2:56 a.m., on Sunday, March 15, 2015, the Terrell Police Department and fire department were dispatched to an accident involving a Ford Ranger pickup truck which was struck by a Union Pacific train at South Virginia Street.

The driver of the pickup truck, 35-year-old Justin Hancher of Wills Point, Texas, became entrapped in the vehicle and was extricated by the Terrell Fire Department, according to Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom.

Hancher was traveling northbound on South Virginia when he “disregarded and then reportedly drove through, but under, the railroad crossing arm at the South Virginia railroad crossing,” stated Sansom. The westbound train was traveling at approximately 40 miles per hour at the time of the collision and pushed Hancher’s vehicle through three other railroad crossings in downtown Terrell before coming to a stop near the South Rockwall Avenue railroad crossing.

Hancher was later transported by a CareFlite ambulance to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Rockwall, Texas, where he awaits DWI charges, according to Sansom.
