ELLIS COUNTY - 28-year-old Ellis County Detention Officer Isaiah Bias was killed in the line of duty on Monday after being attacked by an inmate while placing him in his cell.
The suspect is 45-year-old Aaron Thompson from Ennis, who was booked into the Ellis County Jail in November on three counts of assault on a public servant and evading arrest.Β He is now being charged with capital murder.
Thompson allegedly punched Officer Bias, knocking him to the ground, and then proceeded to choke and beat him before walking away. Officer Bias was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In a press conference, Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman said the attack was "pure evil" and that the Texas Rangers are leading the investigation.
"Most of the time, law enforcement officers and detention officers deal with good folks having a bad day. Occasionally, we deal with bad folks," said Sheriff Norman. "I can honestly say that my staff over the last day has dealt with pure evil."
During the press conference, Sheriff Norman said Officer Bias had been involved with the Sheriff's Office since he was a teenager in the Explorer program. Bias left the Sheriff's Office in 2016 to earn a degree from Navarro College, then returned to the Sheriff's Office, and was promoted to Corporal in Detention Services in 2022.
Thompson was arraigned and issued a $2M bond.
