FORNEY, Texas — The Forney Police Department is warning pickup truck owners of a rise in tailgate thefts within Forney and surrounding communities.

Police are encouraging owners to take precautions such as utilizing tailgate anti-theft devices, tailgate locks, and the placement of unique identification markings in case of theft and recovery.

“The Forney Police Department wishes to warn our citizens that are pickup owners that there has been a rise in tailgate thefts recently,” the department stated on Thursday.

“Tailgates usually do not have any identifying numbers on them and ownership is difficult to prove even if a stolen tailgate is recovered,” stated the department. “Owners can place their own unique numbers or information somewhere on the tailgate to identity ownership using engravers, etc.”

“There are also different styles of locks available to put on the tailgate or truck to help keep the tailgate from being removed from the truck,” stated the department.

Police say taking a little effort to protect your tailgate could save from a big headache later.
