FORNEY, Texas — The Forney Police Department released a statement this morning warning Forney area residents about a possible phone scam.
The phone scam is from persons representing themselves as City of Forney Utility Department employees instructing their potential victims to make a payment over the phone.
“We want our citizens to know that the City of Forney does not call and ask for payments by phone, nor by utility workers in the field. Payments can be made online or in person at the City of Forney Utilities desk,” states the Forney Police Department release.
Forney is the latest in Kaufman County area agencies reporting phone scams. In December and November of last year, the Terrell Police Department and Kaufman County Clerk’s Office advised of possible scams claiming to be representatives from their offices.
In the case of the Terrell Police Department, the scammers were possibly using caller ID spoofing equipment which would display the Terrell Police Department’s number as the one calling the potential victims. The Forney Police Department did not say if this method was being used or not.
“We encourage everyone to be cautious of these kind of phone calls from anyone asking for any kind of payment or personal information,” the release continues. “Contact the company the callers are claiming to represent and ask if the call is legitimate.”
You may contact the Forney Police Department if you have any information regarding this crime at (972) 564-7628 and speak with Detective Clay.
Persons with information concerning a crime can also contact the Kaufman County Crime Stoppers at (877) 847-7522 or online at kaufmancountycrimestoppers.org. Crime stoppers tips are always confidential and can result in awards of up to $1000.00 if they lead to an arrest.
