FORNEY, Texas — On January 23, 2015, a Kaufman County grand jury indicted a Forney woman for a May 2014 hit-and-run accident involving a bicyclist on a U.S. Highway 80 service road.

The grand jury indicted Melida Nava of Forney, Texas, on one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony.

On May 30, 2014, at approximately 8:21 p.m., Nava was allegedly driving westbound on the north service road of U.S. Highway 80 when she struck Barry Richardson of Mesquite, Texas. Richardson was riding a bicycle and Nava allegedly fled the scene of the accident.

Richardson’s injuries at the time of the accident were described as severe and was listed in the intensive care unit at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

An out-of-state witness to the accident provided crucial information to the Forney Police Department including a vehicle description and license plate number which linked to Nava and warrants were issued for her arrest. Four days later, Nava turned herself in to the Forney Police Department and was later released on bonds totaling $35,000.

An attorney for Nava was not yet listed on court records.
