Interstate 20 traffic stop leads to large heroin discovery at Canton-area home

CANTON, Texas — A traffic stop on Interstate 20 lead investigators to a Canton-area home where a large amount of heroin was discovered.

CANTON, Texas — A traffic stop on Interstate 20 lead investigators to a Canton-area home where a large amount of heroin was discovered.

On Thursday, the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office announced the the arrests and heroin seizure.

Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office deputies, with assistance from Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, stopped a vehicle on westbound Interstate 20. During that traffic stop, two pounds of heroin were discovered in the vehicle.

The discovery of heroin during the traffic stop lead investigators to a nearby residence where, during a search, an additional 33 pounds of heroin and $18,700 in cash was discovered. Police estimate the street value of the heroin is between $2.5 and $3 million.

Police have not identified the suspects, pending further investigation but, two suspects were booked into the Van Zandt County Jail facing charges for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance greater than 400 grams and are being held on bonds totaling $600,000 each.
