TERRELL, Texas — A 61-year-old woman fended off two intruders early Monday morning in Terrell — shooting one.
Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom says police responded to the 1800 block of Brookwood Drive in north Terrell in reference to a home invasion.
The homeowner told police she awoke to a noise in her residence and retrieved her handgun. When she entered the threshold of her bedroom door, Sansom says she was confronted by a male subject who began to run towards the living room.
Sansom says that is when the homeowner shot in the direction of the subject. The second subject emerged from another bedroom and attacked the woman.
“She was struck about her face,” stated Sansom. “During the attack, she was able to shoot the subject who attacked her.”
Sansom says several shots were fired during the confrontation and that the one subject had been struck once. The two subjects were able to flee the scene with the woman’s gun.
Police searched area hospitals for gunshot victims and located 21-year-old Saul Guzman at Texas Regional Medical Center in Sunnyvale, Texas. 21-year-old Pedro Guzman was also located at a nearby Valero gas station and identified as the man who had dropped off Saul at the hospital.
Two police officers from the Mesquite Police Department and a Terrell officer made contact with Pedro Guzman at the gas station and located an air soft gun inside the vehicle and also located a purse from a separate burglary of a vehicle in a nearby trashcan. An air soft gun handgrip was located inside the woman’s home.
The case remains under investigation, according to Sansom. Both Guzmans have been charged with burglary of a habitation with intent to commit other felony or assault, theft of firearm, and burglary of a vehicle.
Saul Guzman was treated and released from the hospital into police custody.
