KAUFMAN, Texas — A Kaufman man was arrested days after an unresponsive infant he was caring for was taken to a Dallas area hospital.
Kaufman Police Department Captain Edward Black said 21-year-old Paul Halleck was watching his girlfriend’s 7-month-old infant on Saturday when he called 911 and stated he woke up from a nap and found the infant unresponsive.
On Saturday, October 18, 2014, emergency personnel responded to the home in the 100 block of Love Street and found the infant unresponsive. The infant was taken by ambulance to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Medical records at the hospital indicated the baby sustained injuries to its neck and head. According to Black, the injuries indicated the infant was violently shook. Police are awaiting further medical records to get a full understanding of the infant’s injuries.
Police arrested Halleck on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, and charged him with injury to a child by act or intentionally causing serious bodily injury or serious mental deficiency, impairment, or injury — a first-degree felony. Halleck is being held at the Kaufman County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the infant was listed in critical condition, according to police.
