KAUFMAN, Texas — A Kaufman man was tragically killed after being struck by a felon fleeing Dallas police officers in a carjacked vehicle on Wednesday.

KAUFMAN, Texas — A Kaufman man was tragically killed after being struck by a felon fleeing Dallas police officers in a carjacked vehicle on Wednesday.

At approximately 2 p.m., Dallas police say officers with their Fugitive Unit were working in a covert capacity when they spotted a vehicle taken on Tuesday during an aggravated robbery.

Arriving marked squad cars attempted to stop the vehicle but it fled northbound on Pleasant Drive, pulled away from officers, ran a red light at Bruton Road, and struck a vehicle in the intersection, according to the Dallas Police Department.

Police identified the fleeing suspect as 26-year-old Benjamin Chavez. He ran into an unknown residence, in an attempt to elude police, but was taken into custody.

65-year-old Wayne Towns of Kaufman, Texas, was driving the vehicle that was struck by Chavez. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Chavez later admitted to police to evading officers, crashing into the victim, and the aggravated robbery the day before, according to the Dallas Police Department. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail on charges for aggravated robbery, evading arrest causes death, and murder. He is being held on bonds totaling $225,000.
