WILLS POINT, Texas — A loaded firearm was discovered in a bathroom trashcan at Wills Point High School on Tuesday afternoon, the district police department announced earlier today.

WILLS POINT, Texas — A loaded firearm was discovered in a bathroom trashcan at Wills Point High School on Tuesday afternoon, the district police department announced earlier today.

Now, officials are offering a reward as they investigate to determine who brought the gun on campus and its ownership.

According to today's release, at approximately 3:20 p.m. yesterday, a Wills Point ISD janitor discovered the loaded firearm while he was replacing a trash bag in the men's bathroom at Wills Point High School.

"Officers removed the firearm and witnessed the firearm to be loaded," read a statement from the Wills Point Police Department. "Officers remained on scene as WPISD students were being released at that time."

The district sent out a notification to parents at approximately 9 p.m. on Tuesday notifying them to the discovery of the firearm.

"Over the next several days, additional police presence will be made available throughout the district," read a statement from the district today.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is tracing the firearm's serial number in an effort to identify its owner and the Texas Department of Public Safety is running fingerprint analysis of the firearm.

Police also say video surveillance is also being reviewed.

The Wills Point ISD is offering a reward for any student who offers information which leads to an arrest.
