CANTON, Texas — A man was arrested yesterday and charged with attempted murder following a shooting at the Canton Travel Plaza on Interstate 20 — approximately 20 miles from Kaufman-Van Zandt County line.

On June 14, 2016, at approximately 4 p.m., the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting at the Canton Travel Plaza in the 9800 block of Interstate 20.

“Prior to the deputies arrival the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Rudolph Chestang of Arlington, Texas, had fled the scene in a vehicle,” the department stated in a release on Wednesday afternoon.

Chestang was later detained in Canton, Texas, at the Circle K gas station located at State Highway 19 and Interstate 20.

Investigators positively identified Chestang from video surveillance at the travel center and booked him into the Van Zandt County Jail where he is being held on charges of attempted murder and prohibited items in a correctional facility, pending arraignment. Chestang is also being held on a Tarrant County warrant for failure to identify as fugitive from justice.

The man who was shot, identified as D-Jay Stevenson by KLTV.com, was flown to a Tyler-area hospital. The victim remains hospitalized, according to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office.

A witness captured cell phone video of the altercation and what appears to be Chestang retrieving a handgun from an SUV, see below.
