At approximately 5:45 p.m., the Crandall Police Department, Kaufman Police Department, and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office responded to the new construction area of Heartland, near County Road 257, for a reported shooting.

According to Crandall Police Department Chief Dean Winters, the 35-year-old male victim was found with what appeared to be a possible gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police transported the victim to Dietz Elementary for medical treatment and his eventual transportation to an area hospital.

Winters stressed the shooting did not occur at Dietz Elementary.

The alleged suspect, 18-year-old Lance Allen Nelson, was arrested in the 8100 block of County Road 257 without incident, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and transported to the Kaufman County Jail.

Bond information was not available pending arraignment.

Police seized a pellet gun and a .22-caliber rifle from Nelson's residence as evidence and are awaiting notification from hospital personnel to determine the weapon used in the offense.
