KAUFMAN, Texas — A man who shot his adult son overnight has been taken into custody after a nearly nine hour standoff with police in Kaufman.

At approximately 11:36 p.m., the Kaufman Police Department responded to a home in the 1300 block of Main Street regarding a domestic dispute where shots had been fired.

Kaufman Police Department Captain Ed Black says a 49-year-old man, later identified as Michael Etheredge, had shot his adult son multiple times. The son was transported to Kaufman Presbyterian Hospital where he was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. His current condition is unknown.

The shooting incident took place outside the residence, according to Black, and, upon police officers' arrival, the father retreated into the home and exchanged gunfire with police. The father was initially believed to have been injured in the initial exchange of gunfire but was later determined to be uninjured.

Black says over the course of the standoff, approximately 30 to 35 shots have been fired by the suspect.

The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office tactical team and K9 units responded for assistance as well as the Texas Department of Public Safety SWAT team and two armored vehicles.

"Due to Kaufman Police activity in the area, Phillips Elementary will not open until 10 a.m.," according to Kaufman ISD. "Buses for Phillips students will run 2 hours late. No other campuses are affected."

Etheredge was taken into custody without further incident at 8:16 a.m. and is facing two charges for aggravated assault against a public servant and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member. Etheredge was late arraigned and held on $200,000 per charge for a total bond amount of $600,000.
