FORNEY, Texas — Westbound U.S. Highway 80 has reopened in Sunnyvale following a Forney Police Department standoff with a man in a pickup truck.

Police from Forney, Mesquite, and Dallas County were involved in the standoff on Tuesday morning for approxiamtely two hours on westbound U.S. Highway 80 just east of Collins Road, also known as State Highway 352. Traffic was diverted off the highway with backups to Forney.

Just before 10 a.m., the man, later identified by police as 35-year-old Rojelio Villarreal Gonzales, surrendered to police without further incident.

Police say the incident began as an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle stemming from a domestic incident on Woodcrest Way in Forney.

While en route to the domestic incident, just before 8 a.m., police were notified the man took a yellow pickup truck from a woman without her permission. The truck was spotted traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 80.

Police were able to catch up to the truck near the Dallas-Kaufman County line when they initiated a traffic stop. The man stopped on U.S. Highway 80 just east of Collins Road but was not complying with police orders to exit the vehicle which prompted a tactical team response.

The Mesquite Police Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s Officer also responded to assist at the scene.

Life Community Church, located on the service road of U.S. Highway 80, was placed on lockdown during the incident.

This is a developing story.
