TERRELL, Texas — A Terrell man suffered cardiac arrest after swallowing marijuana during his arrest on Thursday, according to the Terrell Police Department.

Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom says 39-year-old Jonathan Lee Lyons of Terrell, Texas, was suspected of being in possession of marijuana and was also wanted on several other charges when he was confronted by Narcotics Unit officers on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at approximately 6:23 p.m.

“Upon confronting the subject he began to flee police on foot,” Sansom stated in a Saturday press release.

“Officers apprehended him and he began resisting arrest,” stated Sansom. “During the struggle, he removed a baggie of marijuana and began eating it.”

Sansom says officers were able to get Lyons under control and recover a portion of the marijuana while some was ingested.

“It is unknown if other drugs were already in his system or also ingested immediately prior to arrest,” stated Sansom.

During his arrest, an ambulance was called to check Lyons’ medical status. Lyons was treated and release to police custody and taken to the Terrell Municipal Detention Center, according to Sansom.

Lyons was charged with tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, and evading arrest as well as being held on several warrants.

“Overnight in the jail, he seemed in good condition,” stated Sansom. “During his arraignment Friday morning, Detention Officers observed he was visibly shaking. He was offered medical attention and he refused.”

“However, due to the nature of the incident, an ambulance was called and he was transported to Kaufman Presbyterian hospital,” stated Sansom.

The hospital later notified police that Lyons had gone into cardiac arrest, was revived, and remains in ICU.

Sansom says Lyons was released from official police custody and at-large warrants will be sought for the charges.

“Terrell Police will be notified of changes in his condition,” stated Sansom.
