KAUFMAN, Texas — A Kaufman Police Department police officer was injured and another was assaulted during a foot pursuit of an intoxicated man on Monday, May 25, 2015.

At approximately 11:25 a.m., the Kaufman Police Department was notified of an intoxicated man who fled from the emergency room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Kaufman, Texas, stated Kaufman Police Department Captain Ed Black in a Tuesday morning press release.

The man, identified by police as 36-year-old Brandon Cox, fled the hospital and was running into on-coming traffic in the 800 block of Ed Hall Drive, also known as State Highway 243.

Kaufman Police Sergeant Michael Dykes was the first officer on scene and attempted to get Cox out of the roadway before he fled on foot, stated Black. “Dykes suffered an injury to his leg during this foot pursuit.”

A second officer located Cox in the 400 block of Ed Hall Drive when Cox allegedly assaulted the officer during a struggle.

“Dykes was able to get to the scene of the struggle and assist the second officer in taking Cox into custody,” stated Black.

Cox was transported back to the hospital where he was treated and released back into the custody of police and booked into the Kaufman County jail where he is being held on bonds totaling $26,500 for assaulting a public servant, evading arrest or detention causing serious bodily injury, public intoxication, and resisting arrest, search, or transport.

Dykes received medical treatment and was released later that day, stated Black.
