Suspect Arrested In Overnight Officer Shooting

TERRELL - Darrian Cortez Johnson, 25, has been arrested and booked into the Kaufman County Jail. Johnson is charged with Capital Murder of a Peace Officer or Fireman. His bond has not yet been set.

Terrell Officer Jacob Candanoza pulled over a vehicle around 11 p.m. on Sunday, December 8th, near a Super 8 motel in the 1600 block of S. State Highway 34. Candanoza requested a cover unit, and shortly after that, Terrell Police were notified that the officer had been shot. Candanoza was rushed to Baylor Scott and White in Forney, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Candanoza, 28, was sworn in as a peace officer on July 15, 2024, and sources tell inForney.com that Candanoza had previously served in the United States Marine Corps.

Candanoza leaves behind a wife and a young child.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation with assistance from local police and sheriff's deputies.
