KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A suspect who shot his neighbor early Wednesday morning and barricaded himself in his home during an hours-long standoff was shot and killed by a law enforcement sniper after opening fire on police, according to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the situation.

The incident began around 7 a.m. when authorities from Kaufman and Henderson County responded to a shooting at the intersection of State Highway 274 and County Road 4044. A man had shot his neighbor in the face with a shotgun, according to the source, and barricaded himself in his house.
The victim was flown to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he was treated and released, according to another source.
A Texas DPS Special Response Team and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, had been involved in the standoff with the man since this morning’s incident.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., the source told inForney.com a law enforcement sniper shot and killed the suspect after he came outside of the home and began firing at law enforcement.
The Texas Rangers, reportedly from the Waco division, are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
SH 274 is expected to remain closed for several hours as the investigation continues.
Troopers identified the suspect as 56-year-old Anthony Bertoni.
The Seven Points Volunteer Fire Department responded earlier this morning in response to the shooting victim and to prepare a landing zone for a medical helicopter to transport the individual.
A request for additional information has been made with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office which took jurisdiction of the incident.
