Terrell High School student arrested for having unloaded firearm in backpack

TERRELL, Texas — A Terrell High School student was arrested yesterday after an unloaded firearm was discovered in his backpack.

TERRELL, Texas — A Terrell High School student was arrested yesterday after an unloaded firearm was discovered in his backpack.

In a letter to parents sent home with students today, Terrell ISD Police Chief Gary Mork says the department was made aware of the firearm shortly before students were released from school yesterday.

"Police quickly secured the unloaded weapon, and the student was taken into police custody," he said. "In addition to potential criminal charges, the student involved faces discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct."

Mork says parents should take this opportunity to talk to their children about the serious ramifications of bringing a weapon of any kind on school property.

"We encourage students, like those who came forward [yesterday], to report any suspicious activity to a teacher, school administrator, or campus police officer," he said. "Our goal is to provide students and staff with a safe and secure learning environment each and every day."
