TERRELL, Texas — A Kaufman County grand jury has handed up a murder indictment for a Terrell man in connection with the shooting death of another Terrell man in May 2017.

The grand jury indicted 29-year-old Ontarius Cardae Morris in connection with the shooting death of 23-year-old Ja Darek De Shawn Moss on May 5, 2017.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours in the 1300 block of South Rockwall Avenue. Morris fled the scene at the time of the shooting and later turned himself into Texas Rangers nearly two weeks later after a murder warrant was issued for his arrest.

Morris is being held at the Kaufman County Jail on bonds totaling $1,250,000 — on the murder charge and two probation revocations.

Court records indicate Morris was on five years deferred adjudication in a 2014 shooting incident, also in Terrell, for which a motion to revoke has been filed.

In the 2014 shooting incident, Morris shot at a man’s vehicle in the area of Park Street — striking the vehicle at least once which shattered the vehicle’s rear window. He pled guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in that case for which he was placed on deferred adjudication with 200 hours of community service.

Additionally, a motion to revoke was filed for his deferred adjudication in a 2008 charge for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 1, less than one gram, in a drug free zone.

Multiple motions to revoke were filed in the drug case with orders to amend or extend Morris’ probation in January 2014 and March 2015. The latest motion to revoke came after Morris was charged in the May 2017 murder.
