TERRELL, Texas — Two Terrell men were arrested early Sunday morning following a police pursuit and manhunt in Terrell involving a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter.

Just after 1 a.m., on Sunday, March 20, 2016, Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom says a police department supervisor attempted to stop a maroon Chevy pickup truck on a traffic violation but, instead of stopping, the truck fled.

Sansom says the vehicle tried to flee in the area of State Highway 34, Delphine Street, and Temple Street when it went off road, attempted to jump the railroad tracks, and high-centered in a ditch.

The driver of the vehicle then fled on foot — prompting a manhunt in a wooded area near Gardner Street which involved a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter.

The driver was later apprehended and identified as 26-year-old Corey Cosby Jr., of Terrell, Texas, and the passenger was identified as 28-year-old Phillip Mata, also of Terrell, Texas.

Sansom says a probably cause search of the vehicle yielded 64 grams of marijuana and further search, incident arrest, led to the seizure of an electronic scale, small plastic baggies “consistent with the distribution of narcotics,” and a small baggie with suspected Zanax pills. Cosby was also found in possession of a bag containing suspected methamphetamine. Police also seized $1,435 in cash.

Cosby was arrested and charged with evading arrested of detention with a vehicle for which he is being held on a $100,000 bond, evading arrest or detention on a $15,000 bond, possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 greater than or equal to one gram and less than four grams on a $100,000 bond, possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 3 less than 28 grams on a $15,000 bond, possession of marijuana less than or equal to four ounces and greater than two ounces on a $15,000 bond, and two warrants for a child safety seat violation and no driver’s license.

Mata was charged with possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 greater than or equal to one gram and less than four grams on a $100,000 bond, possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 3 less than 28 grams on a $1,5000 bond, possession of marijuana less than or equal to four ounces and greater than two ounces on a $1,500 bond, and an open container warrant out of the Wilmer Police Department.
