CRANDALL, Texas — A portion of the westbound service road of Highway 175 in Crandall has been closed for several hours this morning, while Crandall Police Department and DPS investigate a traffic stop that ended in a fatality.

Sunday morning at approximately 11:30AM, a Crandall Police Officer initiated a traffic stop for a license plate violation on a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Initially, the vehicle was traveling Eastbound on Highway 175 near FM 148. The driver failed to stop and continued eastbound where the vehicle exited highway 175 at FM 1390 and reentered Highway 175 westbound.

The vehicle accelerated away from the patrol unit where the suspect vehicle left the roadway, rolled, ejecting the driver just west of FM 148. CPR was administered but the driver was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. No identification was found on the driver or in the vehicle.

According to a statement from Crandall Police Chief Dean Winters, the registered owner of the vehicle advised they sold the vehicle approximately 6 months ago but did not have information on who purchased it.

Texas Department of Public Safety is the lead agency investigating the crash and continues to have the service road closed around the scene.

The driver has not been identified at the time of information release. This is a developing story.
