FORNEY, Texas — Long-time Forney resident and actress, Darlene Cates, passed away in her sleep Sunday morning, the family announced.
“It is with a bitter-sweet heart that we share that our precious wife, mother, and Gaga, Darlene Guthrie Cates, was called home, somewhat unexpectedly, peacefully in her sleep Sunday morning, March 26th,” her daughter, Sheri Cates Morgan, stated on Facebook.
“We take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in the arms of our Heavenly Father, breaking away only to dance with our Savior, Jesus,” she said.
Cates is best known on screen for her role in the 1993 movie ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ as the mother of Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio.
She later went on to play roles in ‘Picket Fences’ (1994), ‘Wolf Girl’ (2001), and ‘Billboard’ which is in post production. Cates was also featured in the TV series ‘Touched by an Angel’ and the movie short ‘Mother.’
Life celebration arrangements are pending, according to the family.
