The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. when officers were called to a Whataburger due to reports of a man threatening staff with a knife. Though the suspect fled the scene, he later alerted the police to his presence near Poteet High School. Responding officers encountered an individual armed with a long gun, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Police subsequently surrounded a residence close to the high school, where the suspect was found hiding and ultimately taken into custody. Throughout the morning, Mesquite PD advised the public to avoid the area via social media, ensuring that there was no danger to the schools themselves.
