On January 22, the Forney City Council voted to approve a commercial and residential rate adjustment for solid waste collection from the Community Waste Disposal (CWD). CWD has kept their rates the same for two years, but requested an adjustment due to their increase in costs of doing business. Fuel prices were a major part of their request to adjust the rates.
What this means for residents in Forney is a 2.2% increase for solid waste collection, otherwise known as trash collection. It amounts to a 17 cent increase per month. A single family residence will go from paying $9.75 a month, to paying $9.92. The same rate applies to a two-family residence on one water meter, a two-family residence on separate water meters, as well as apartments and mobile homes. Senior citizens currently pay $8.75 a month but will now be paying $8.92 a month.
The increase in charges will be changed on the City billing beginning in February 2013.
Commercial businesses in Forney are required to use CWD because CWD has an exclusive rights contract, according to Community Development Director Peter Morgan. CWD calls the increase a “market adjustment” that is necessary due to the cost of business increases they have occurred. They provided the Council with a breakdown of exactly why they need to raise the cost to residents and commercial businesses and insisted that they do all that they can to keep costs down for their customers.
Commercial businesses who use one 8 cubic yard container that is picked up once a week will see an increase of $2.14 a month, which equates to 1.91%. Those who utilize a “35 cubic yard per haul open top, rolloff container,” will see an increase of $7.97 a month, which is a 1.53% increase. The billing will be adjusted and the increase will show in the February billing. The Council voted unanimously to approve the rate adjustment for residents and commercial businesses.
Mayor Darren Rozell said that he would like to see more people begin using recycling services, which are free to City of Forney residents. His hope is that an increase in recycling participation could be used in the future to offset any cost increases needed for trash pickup, as well as to reduce the amount of recyclable garbage that is ending up unnecessarily in landfills. If you are a City resident and would like a free recycling bin, you can call the City of Forney at 972-552-2291 to request a bin.
