FORNEY - National Walk & Roll to School Day on October 9th.
According to the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center (UNCHSRC), the first national "Walk & Roll" to school day was in 1997, aimed at raising awareness of the need for walkable communities. In the year 2000, this became an international event, with the United Kingdom and Canada promoting it. In 2012, the first national Bike & Roll to School Day took place on May 9th, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists' National Bike Month.
According to UNCHSRC, "In 2006, world-wide interest led the International Walk to School Committee to establish International Walk to School Month, where countries choose a day or week in October (or use the entire month!) to promote walking to school."
