MESQUITE, Texas — A 22-year-old Mesquite man was arrested at the Texas-Mexico border after being found in possession of approximately 50 pounds of methamphetamine valued at nearly $1 million.

The man, who has not been identified, was passing through the Progreso-Donna Port of Entry when he was referred by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers for a secondary inspection.

“In secondary, CBP officers discovered 48.45 pounds of alleged methamphetamine concealed within 10 beverage containers in the vehicle’s interior,” stated the CBP in a release. “The estimated street value of the methamphetamine is $969,142.”

The CBP officers seized the narcotics and the man’s vehicle. He was arrested and turned over to the Homeland Security Investigations special agents for further investigation.

“Drug smugglers employ some unique and ever changing methods to smuggle their drugs into the United States,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Progreso/Donna Port of Entry. “However, our officers continuously remain on the lookout for new and different smuggling trends smugglers use in their attempts to get their drugs on our streets.”
