KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The Court of Appeals in the Fifth District of Texas in Dallas affirmed the conviction of a Kaufman County man, who was a registered sex offender, for continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14.

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The Court of Appeals in the Fifth District of Texas in Dallas affirmed the conviction of a Kaufman County man, who was a registered sex offender, for continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14.

In September 2014, 55-year-old Pedro Segura Jr. was found guilty by a Kaufman County jury of continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14. In October 2014, Kaufman County 422nd District Judge B. Michael Chitty sentenced Segura to 99 years in prison.

Segura appealed the conviction with the Court of Appeals in the Fifth District of Texas in Dallas, Texas, on the grounds the court abused its discretion in denying Segura’s motion for a new trial due to alleged jury misconduct and the admission of a nurse examiner’s report.

In December 2015, the Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court’s judgement stating, “We resolve appellant’s issues against him and affirm the trial court’s judgment.”

The charges against Segura stem back to January 2010, according to the indictment. Segura is accused of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14 continuously from on or about January 1, 2010, through September 26, 2011. The victim was identified as Segura’s granddaughter.

Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Lauren Cook also introduced Segura’s prior sexual contact conviction in Harris County in 1991 which required him to register as a sexual offender for life.

“We’re very satisfied with the sentence,” Cook told inForney.com after the sentencing. “We wanted life, but happy with 99. We’re glad its over for the family.”

During a victim impact statement, the mother of the abused child called Segura a "demon" and said, "You had a chance to be a father and you failed at that. You had a chance to be a grandfather and you failed at that. You took the innocence from my daughter."
