Armed felon arrested, closing burglary cases and thwarting attack on officers

KAUFMAN, Texas — The arrest of an armed felon earlier this week closed several burglary cases and thwarted a possible attack on two police officers in Kaufman.

KAUFMAN, Texas — The arrest of an armed felon earlier this week closed several burglary cases and thwarted a possible attack on two police officers in Kaufman.

The suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Jerry Green, told police he had intended on shooting a Kaufman Police Department police officer during a traffic stop overnight Wednesday-Thursday in Kaufman.

The arrest came after an alert citizen called 911 for a suspicious person who appeared to be breaking into an ATM machine at a Kaufman bank, according to the Kaufman Police Department in a statement on Thursday.

According to the department, Officer D. Whitson responded to the scene but the suspect had already left the location. Whitman spotted the suspect vehicle driving away from the area and initiated a traffic stop.

“Officer Whitson approached the vehicle and immediately felt that something was not right due to the actions of the suspect inside the vehicle,” stated the department.

Officer D. Crouch arrived on scene to assist Whitson and Green was asked to step out of the vehicle, at which point, Green attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle but had mistakenly shifted the vehicle in neutral instead of drive.

Green was then tased, removed from the vehicle, and arrested on multiple charges.

A loaded handgun was found in Green’s waistband.

According to the Kaufman Police Department statement, Green told police he had intended to “shoot Officer Whitson and shoot it out with them,” but, instead, Green was tased before he could reach the gun.

In the vehicle, police located stolen firearms, numerous illegal narcotics, and items believed to have been burglarized in Crandall and Irving.

The Crandall Police Department says a warrant was issued for Green’s for burglary of a habitation after several items in his vehicle were linked to a burglary on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, in the 2000 block of Blakehill Drive in Heartland.

“You should all be very proud of these Officers,” stated the Kaufman Police Department. “They put a man in jail who intended to do great harm to our city and our citizens, as well as our Officers.”

Green is being held at the Kaufman County Jail for resisting arrest, search, of transportation on a $5,000 bond; burglary of a habitation on a $50,000 bond from the Irving Police Department; theft of firearm on a $6,000 bond; unlawful possession of a firearm by felon on a $25,000 bond; a Crandall Police Department charge for burglary of a habitation; possession of drug paraphernalia on a $500 bond; possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 less than one gram on a $6,000 bond; possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 greater than or equal to one gram and less than four grams on a $25,000 bond; and fraud/destroy/removal concealment writing out of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office.
