CRANDALL, Texas — A 17-year-old is behind bars facing charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct in two separate shooting incidents on Wednesday morning in the Heartland and Crandall area.
Crandall Police Department Chief Dean Winters says a .22-caliber rifle which was used in both incidents has been recovered.
At approximately 10:24 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, the Crandall Police Department received a shots fired on Shawnee Trail in Heartland.
A man reported hearing several gunshots behind his house as well as a round which struck his back porch which caused debris to strike him in the leg.
“Empty .22 caliber shell casings and holes consistent with the same weapon were found in the fence of the victim,” Winters told inForney.com. “One bullet was recovered from the victim's porch.”
The Crandall Police Department, with assistance from the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office and the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, searched the area for the suspect and were advised by witnesses the suspect left in a black, four-door Dodge vehicle prior to officers arrival.
Nearly four hours later, the Crandall Police Department responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of Rolling Ridge Court in which a man was firing shots at another man, unrelated to the morning’s incident.
Officers observed a black, four-door Dodge vehicle in the area of the call upon their arrival.
“When officers attempted to make contact with the individuals inside the residence, a subject fled out of a rear window of the residence and attempted to jump a fence,” stated Winters. “An officer was able to detain the subject who was identified as Diayeveon Ross.”
Investigators determined Ross fired several shots from the .22-caliber rifle while standing in the 200 block of Rolling Ridge Court at a 19-year-old victim. The victim was uninjured.
“Ross gave a verbal and written statement admitting his involvement in the Deadly Conduct and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon,” stated Winters.
Ross was transported to the Kaufman County Jail where he is being held on charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with a $40,000 bond and deadly conduct with a $10,000 bond.
Two other individuals at the residence on Rolling Ridge Court were also arrested on unrelated warrants and transported to the Kaufman County Jail.
“The Crandall Police Department wants to thank the residents for their vigilance in assisting in the investigation,” stated Winters. “That partnership helps keep the community safe and without that partnership, this individual would not have been located as quickly.”
“The Crandall Police Department will continue to use all available resources to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of the Heartland Community and City of Crandall,” stated Winters.
