MESQUITE, Texas — A Mesquite family says their home was ransacked in a Wednesday burglary, but, it’s not their stolen belongings they worry about, it’s their pets which were reportedly injured in the encounter.
Mesquite police say four men burglarized the family’s home, located in the 2800 block of Chisolm Trail, on Wednesday.
The men allegedly poured bleach, ignitor fluid, and other household cleaners on the family’s pets — partially blinding one of their puppies, according to the family.
The dog was taken to an area vet for medical treatment.
“The chemicals caused cornea ulcers that cover 80% of her eyes,” a family member stated on a GoFundMe page established to raise funds for veterinary costs. “They're doing everything possible to save the little sight she has left.”
“We don't care for our material belongings we just want our pets to get better,” she said.
Police say a crime stoppers tip led to the arrests of two of the suspected four burglars on Friday. The other two have been identified but remain at large.
18-year-old Zavier Humphrey of Dallas, Texas, was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary of a habitation and one count of cruelty to animals. 17-year-old Jacob Hernandez, also of Dallas, was charged with two counts of burglary of a habitation.
Mesquite Police Department spokesperson Lt. Brian Parrish says the homeowners reported a disturbing mess throughout the house with food thrown around the kitchen and personal belongings dumped on the floor.
