FORNEY, Texas — Criminal charges are pending for a student involved in a Unity Bowl prank overnight just hours before cross-town rivals Forney and North Forney are set to take the football field for the third annual matchup.
District official have confirmed at least one student would be facing criminal charges and suspension for spray painting the letters “NFHS” on several signs on the Forney High School campus overnight. Officials could not however disclose the students age or campus they attend.
The historic jackrabbit statue on the Lions Club announcement board in downtown Forney was also vandalized. The back half of the rabbit was spray painted blue.
According to a statement by the Forney Police Department, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers are continuing to investigate the vandalism. Possible charges include criminal mischief, a misdemeanor offense. The class of the misdemeanor will be determined by the amount of pecuniary loss: less than $50 is a class C; more than $50 but less than $500 is a class B; and more than $500 but less than $1,500 is a class A.
The student has been suspended, according to the district, and will attend the district’s Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) campus.
This isn’t the first time the jackrabbit statue fell victim to a rivalry prank. Over the years, the statue has been shot with a bow and arrow and was once kidnapped.
Reports that students threw urine filled balloons at other students is also being investigated but at this time has not been substantiated.
