KAUFMAN - Darrian Cortez Johnson, 25, of Mississippi, has been indicted by a Kaufman County Grand Jury and charged with Capital Murder in the shooting of Jacob Candanoza on December 8, 2024. Terrell Police Chief says this is the first step toward healing and justice.
The indictment charges that Johnson, in Kaufman County, Texas, “did then and there intentionally and knowingly cause the death of an individual, namely Jacob Candanoza, hereafter styled the complainant, by shooting him with a firearm, and the complainant was a peace officer who was acting in the lawful discharge of an official duty, namely conducting a traffic stop, and the defendant knew the complainant was a peace officer.”
Terrell Police Chief Arley D. Sansom told inForney.com that he supports the indictment and that it is the first step toward healing and justice for the community.
“I am very pleased and in full support of the decision today of the Kaufman County Grand Jury to indict the suspect for Capital Murder of a Police Officer, in the death of Jacob Candanoza. This is the first step towards justice being served and will begin the healing for this community,” said Chief Sansom.
“I hope that it serves as a clear message that the members of this county and our law enforcement community will not allow this type of behavior to go unpunished.”
District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley said her office will now prosecute the case against Darrian Johnson in the 422nd District Court.
