Trooper Daniel Koelsch attempted to stop a vehicle at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2015, DPS Public Information Officer Kyle Bradford told inForney.com. The driver and only occupant of the vehicle fled from the trooper and bailed on foot near Farm-to-Market (FM) 741 and the Heartland community.

The suspect, later identified as 34-year-old John Rumfield, has an outstanding parole warrant and was driving a reported stolen vehicle. Rumfield was able to evade capture on Sunday but was arrested January 6, 2015, by DPS and booked into the Kaufman County Jail. Rumfield is charged with evading arrest or detention and unathorized use of a vehicle and being held on bonds of $2,000 and $25,000, respectively. Rumfield is also being held without bond on his parole violation.

A DPS helicopter, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, the Crandall Police Department, and the Forney Police Department assisted in the search this morning.

The trooper suffered a dislocated shoulder sustained from a fall while chasing the suspect on foot and will require surgery, Bradford said.
