FORNEY, Texas — The Forney Police Department is warning the public of two scams their department has received calls on in the past couple of weeks — a tax scam and abduction scam.
With tax season well underway, the Forney Police Department says they have received numerous calls from individuals who had received calls from persons claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) demanding payment and personal information. The scammer is threatening warrants and arrests, according to the department.
“We want everyone to know that it is not wise to give anyone any of your personal information (date of birth, Social Security number, account numbers, address, etc.) over the phone,” the department stated. “Some of these scammers can be aggressive, demand immediate payment, and even threaten deportation.”
If you’ve received a similar call, contact the Forney Police Department at (972) 564-7600 or visit irs.gov to file a complaint.
Another scam the department says is circulating is one in which the scammer calls the victim and claims either: as a friend, their child has been kidnapped; or as the kidnapper, demanding a ransom.
Police say the scammers are possibly using social media to gather personal information on their would-be targets. Often times, the scammer will warn the victim not to call police about the kidnapping.
“Should you receive a call of this nature, use caution and do not provide any personal information,” stated the department. “As always, feel free to contact local law enforcement if you need help.”
