TERRELL, Texas — Four people were arrested on Wednesday afternoon following a Terrell Police Department pursuit and an armed standoff.
At approximately 11 a.m., a Terrell Police Department narcotics officer attempted to stop a vehicle and arrest a known wanted felon, identified as 24-year-old Dylan Canaday, who was wanted on a parole violation warrant for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.
The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, north on State Highway (SH) 205, and ended near a private residence in the 16000 block of SH 205 just east of the Airpark East Airport and FM 548.
Canaday was seen exiting the vehicle with a firearm and flee on foot into the residence, according to Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom. The pursuing officer's on-board dash cam system later confirmed Canaday fired on the officer as he ran into the house.
Upon his entry, Sansom says two adult residents fled the home and reported two children were inside.
Several officers immediately made entry into the residence and removed both children, ages one and five, from the home and to safety, stated Sansom.
Canaday does not live at the residence but was known to the owners, according to Sansom who said a security perimeter was established by multiple agencies including the Terrell Police Department, Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office, and Kaufman County Constables.
Canaday refused to exit the home and the Terrell Police Department’s SWAT Team and Tactical Protection Vehicle, an MRAP, were deployed.
“Attempts to contact the suspect were unanswered via several means,” stated Sansom. “He refused to exit or to surrender.”
Canaday was believed to be the only occupant of the home at this time, according to witnesses, and police say he was armed. So, after approximately an hour of refused contact, Sansom says SWAT made entry into the residence to local and apprehend Canaday.
Sansom says officers located Canaday hiding under clothing in the laundry room.
Canaday still refused to surrender and was tazed before being taken into custody around 1:09 p.m., according to Sansom.
“The weapon, a Beretta semi automatic handgun was recovered at the location and in the possession of the suspect,” stated Sansom.
Canaday was taken into custody on the active warrant and initially charged with evading arrest or detention in a vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon, and resisting arrest.
Prior to the traffic stop, Sansom says narcotics officers received a tip from a confidential informant that Canaday was transporting illegal narcotics in a black safe inside the white, four-door Cadillac in which he fled from police. A search warrant was later obtained for the contents of the safe and investigators located two clear baggies containing a clear shard-like substance of suspected methamphetamine which weighed 93.1 grams, a plastic baggie of suspected cheese heroin which weighed 11.9 grams, a plastic baggie which contained suspected hashish which weighed 9.8 grams, and three pills of suspected Ecstasy.
Sansom says the narcotics will be sent to a lab for further testing.
Canaday was then charged with manufacture delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 greater than 4 four grams and less than 200 grams, manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 less than one gram, and aggravated assault of a public servant.
Sansom says three others were arrested in connection with the incident: 22-year-old Carami Mullins of Terrell, Texas, for outstanding warrants out of Kaufman and Van Zandt Counties; 27-year-old Celina Gutierrez of Terrell, Texas, for outstanding warrants from the Grand Prairie Police Department; and 26-year-old Jonathan Joiner of Terrell, Texas, for outstanding warrants out of the Terrell Police Department.
CORRECTION: Police initially reported Canaday was bitten by a police K9 during the search of the residence. On Thursday, police report he was not bitten.
